Coast: the sea,the sea Exhibition Set-Up

With only a couple of hours to go until the Opening & Private View of the exhibition, we're almost ready! The Malthouse has been converted into the Shed Shop, and all the images are hung - it's looking really good, and we are getting very excited about tonight....


Fingers crossed the final details all come together - and we hope to see some of you this evening!

Collate Presents - exhibition opportunity

Collate Presents are currently calling for submissions for their Mull It Over exhibition - a collaborative project in Brighton, UK. They are not taking any commission on works sold, and the submission fee is only £1! It sounds like a really interesting project - have a look at their website for more info, to read the full brief, and submission info. Submissions close on January 2nd though - so get in there quick if you are interested!


Here is a summary of their Artists Brief:

The beautiful chaps at ‘Artists Residence’ have offered up their newly renovated gallery space to us to put on a stonking show. They will also be on the hunt for stock prints and pieces for their new shop so it is an ideal opportunity for you to meet a key local buyer.

MULL IT OVER will work as a theme, which you are welcome to use as inspiration for new works, however we are also really interested in works you have hidden away in sketchbooks or tucked away in a drawer or filed under ‘incongruous’ on your hard drive. All artists have a stash of sketches, photos, thoughts, polished pieces never shown and half-baked ideas that are gathering dust, we invite you to whip them out and throw them at us!

Collate Presents love to bend the rules of the well worn standard gallery model. We are looking for a large amount of 2D works/prints which we will tessellate to cover the walls of the gallery. We want to overwhelm the walls with your genius so the more the merrier!

We will be working with standard ISO paper sizes so you can opt to submit your work in four different sizes and in order to obtain a large amount of your beautiful work we have, as always, kept the costs low. We would like to see a variety of your work and give you the opportunity to show multiple pieces.

We welcome submissions from all aspects of creative genius; photographers, collage artists, digital artists, designers, makers, sculptors, writers etc.

Students and practising artists are welcome to participate from all areas of the UK.

Coast: the sea, the sea - Private View Invite

Coast: the sea, the sea: Exhibition at the Town Mill Malthouse, Lyme Regis

Private View: Friday 30^th December 2011 – 5 to 7pm

You are cordially invited to the Private View of a Shed Photography group exhibition of photography, illustration, painting and sculpture - Coast: the sea, the sea, at the Town Mill Malthouse in Lyme Regis on the 30th of December at 5pm.

The exhibition is an opportunity to see how local artists such as Jeanne Goodridge, Pete Hackett, Chelsea Davine and Jess Douglas view the Coast that dominates the horizon, with its rolling weather systems and ever changing light.  In addition we’ll be showcasing the work of established photographers from all over the world, from our website The Shed Photography.  

We are delighted that in conjunction with the exhibition, photographer Maisie Hill will be running two photo days on Sat 31st of December and Saturday 7th of January which will include a 4 hour tutorial, techniques and a portfolio discussion. All participants will be given a free print of one of the images taken on the course.  

Illustrator Paula Youens will also be demonstrating mono print making throughout the week, whilst Chelsea Davine will be available to talk about painting and how to develop photographic practice by joining our ever-growing community of talented artists and photographers.

Artist of the Week: Brian Eastmond

For our final Artist of the Week of 2011, we are happy to celebrate the work of Brian Eastmond! Brian was born in Potters Bar, and studied at the Amersham College of Photography and Design where he was awarded his Diploma in Photography. His recent move to the South West of England from East London has enabled him to move from cityscapes to seascapes, although the city skyline will always hold a passion for him. 


About his own work, and his connection with the South West, Brian says:


"As a child spending many holidays in Devon and Dorset, I remember having this fascination for the sea and the life in and around her. I hope to capture the power and the grace that she can show us."

Coast: the sea, the sea - Calendars!

With the Coast exhibition just around the corner, and to meet the demands of all the people who wanted a calendar, we have printed a very limited run of Coast calendars, featuring the images of some of the Shed creatives who will be appearing in the exhibition. 

The calendars are printed on excellent quality 200 gsm silk paper, and we think they look great!

Guest blog by Pete Hackett, Artist of the Week

At Art college I got into photography when I was given a camera and told to go out and take pictures.This was in the days of films so you only had limited shots, greater selection was needed. I mainly used those pictures in silk screen printing a process I really enjoyed.

Over the years I have continued taking pictures and in recently have had a resurgence of interest. Most recently because of my involvement in The Shed & blipfoto, an online daily journal, one picture a day. This ensures a lot more pictures are taken,instead of just noticing interesting stuff, it gets photographed.


This led to myself & two other local photographers mounting our own show at the Malthouse
in Lyme Regis, open till 23/12/11. Three by Three: three months of pictures by three photographers. A lot of interesting images.

I'm not working on any thing in particular right now, but I'm always 'working' on something.

Artist of the Week: Pete Hackett

This week our Artist of the Week is Lyme Regis-based photographer Pete Hackett. Pete originally studied Fine Art in Hull, in the 1970s, and since then has been self-employed, travelling the world with his job. He thinks of himself as an Artist/Photographer/Carpenter, and began taking photos to use in other projects which never materialised, to the photos themselves became the 'work'.

Pete also makes sculptures, and sells and exhibits his work whenever he can. He is currently part of an exhibition on at the Malthouse, Lyme Regis: Three by Three. The exhibition features the work of three photographers over three months, and is open until Friday 23 December, 11am-4pm daily.

Philippa Gedge, Artist of the Week, on a recent photoshoot

I recently spent a day photographing lovely things for a gorgeous new online boutique. Our locations were Electric House on Portobello Road and a magical private house in Hammersmith where we styled and propped, umm’d and ah’d and hair and make up’d ten lovely ladies.

The commission was for Chic Londres – Little Boutique selling rare and stunning items inspired and sourced by the founder’s travels as a journalist.

About the founder: Paris-born Frederique Andreani has been a journalist for the past thirteen years. As the London correspondent for leading French publications Le Point and Libération, she has interviewed personalities including Tony Blair, Jamie Oliver, Paul Smith, Bob Geldof, Natalie Massenet and Seif Gaddafi.

Artist of the Week, Philippa Gedge, on her Journey

After graduating in 2000 from the University of the Arts in London I was at a loose end. I knew what I didn’t want to do and that was to pursue a career as a Graphic Designer, my vocational degree subject. My passion and the subject that really got me excited seemed impossible to crack into. How did I even begin to become a photographer? And was it a worthwhile career?

Desperately in need of an income I started tempting at an academic publishers and was quickly assigned my own lists to work on as a full time job. I was the Marketing Co-ordinator on the Middle East and Asian studies lists! I had no experience of marketing let alone Asia or the Middle East. I went to Morocco when I was eighteen where I narrowly escaped permanent residency but that didn’t seem to justify a career in all things Middle East! The job turned out to have a silver lining. When we were all offered voluntary redundancy in 2005 most of us leapt at the chance. Now was the time to try my hand at photography; mid twenties, no responsibilities, money for a bit of training and what felt like total freedom to do what I wanted. And so it began. It was hard work starting out. I did a lot of work for free and when I did charge, I charged next to nothing for it. I made mistakes but learnt quickly from them and soon my confidence grew and my photography started to look ‘pro’. It has been a long slog and at times financially horrific but my family and friends have stuck by me emotionally and financially too and without them I never would have had the courage to believe in and work for myself.

Working as a freelancer can be lonely and frustrating at times but when you see your hard work paid off it is well worth every quiet moment at your desk when you feel you’re the only one alive.

People always ask me where I see myself in five year’s time and I have never been able to answer until now. In five year’s time I would like to still be working for myself, doing exactly what I’m doing in a property with a small studio in the garden where I can invite people to have their portraits taken. I would like to know that people want me to take their pictures and have my diary booked up a year in advance. By then I really should have been featured in Stylist and the Sunday Times magazines more than I am now but that’s just luck and I’m working on it…
