Reflections on the work of some other Shed Creatives - by Jillian Hunt

I have been looking at some of the other artists that inspire me on The Shed website - there are so many!

I love looking at  Alella Green Corridor by Lottie Heffer, I wish I could take  architectual shots like this as with Paula YouensAutumn Window.

Phillipa Gedge has a lovely design like quality to the way she sees things like King Penguins Close Up. Jeanne Goodridge's Blue Wave has always been a favourite.

The way Moya Paul creates abstract distortions is very interesting, particularly The Ripple no.9 as also John Stevens post camera creations...but I also think it is enjoyable to see an image as it is, like Hestercombe by Bob Healey.  There are so many...Andy White's compositions, artist Fiona G. Roberts' style and the photograms by Sally Shrubsall.

Guest blog & new work by Jillian Hunt, Artist of the Week

Reclining Nude
Jillian Hunt

My background is textiles and textile design and this often shows through in my images.  They always seem to be textural and often abstract.  I look though the lens and and create a section from the 'big picture' I am looking at - like a section of a flower you may not notice or water movements that you don't see at first. Using a digital camera and taking colour into the image is another dimension I enjoy although currently I am working in the darkroom alot and getting hands on creative with black and white film again as the image dimensions become tonal instead along with the textures and abstract design.

I run my own business as a seamstress and therefore always working with fabrics and this has lead me to look at printing my images on dress fabrics and then also as The Shed does - printing on aluminium and also I am trying perspex.  I will be showing some of these different printing ideas in an exhibition I am sharing with some other artists at The Town Mill Art Gallery at the end of September this year and possibly at the church in June in Charmouth.

Artist of the Week: Jillian Hunt

Amonites
Jillian Hunt
This week, our Artist of the Week is Jillian Hunt! Jillian lives in Charmouth and enjoys walking her dogs through the fields and along the beaches taking her camera with her. She observes and is influenced by the surroundings. She witnesses and responds to the way the weather and seasons change familiar objects and landscapes. Rain on water, sun causing shadows, wind sending waves crashing on the shore. Her work has a wild freedom to it, and she captures raw moments of nature in a really unique way. Having studied Textile Design at Great Yarmouth School Art and Design, Jillian often uses her background to bring texture to her images.

As ever, we will be hearing from Jillian herself this week, and seeing some of her new work, as well as enjoying what we have seen before!

Guest blog: Jeanne Goodridge on Photoshop, and the work of other Shed Artists

I have finished my photoshop course today & can't wait to get started on working on some of my images, looking forward to altering them to look more like art pictures. It's amazing what you can do in this program so watch this space. I have always just wanted to take the photo & not alter it in anyway but now feel the buzz to do something different. I love the way Moya Paul works with her photos....

I have looked through all of The Shed Artists' in the hope of choosing some to comment on - so many great photos, I don't know where to start! Here goes:

Chris Daubney for his wildlife - a subject I also love photographing whilst travelling in America.

We moved to Lyme Regis over 13 years ago when we bought a business, we leased it out 7 years ago this then gave me the time to spend on my Photography.  I belong to The Town Mill Arts Guild where I am also a committee member this gives me the chance to get involved in the exhibitions & the new retail section we have now set up, I also get to meet so many different people working with art, it is so interesting to see how everybody sees life  in their art. It makes you think how you can photograph different ways. I am exhibiting at the moment in the downstairs gallery at the The Town Mill. I also sell my work in various places in Lyme Regis & surrounding areas
At present I am on a photoshop course so trying out lots of new ideas with my present photos.

Reflections, Pamela Hollis

Our Artist of the Week Pamela Hollis has been taking advantage of the nice weather, and took these photos on Monday at the Marina in Weymouth. We especially appreciate the anticipation of summer they seem to embody - it's like you can almost feel the warm sun on your back when you look at them!

Thanks for these images Pamela, and here's to us all getting more camera time in as the days get longer, and the light gets more plentiful…

Guest Blog: by Pamela Hollis, Artist of the Week

An interest in photography was sparked by a visit to Claude Monet’s garden at Giverny in the late ’80s.

Several years and countless rolls of film later - the digital age has been a revolution in many ways, not least - the ability to take hundreds of images of any subject, anywhere, without the necessity to carry numerous rolls of film! It has also given many photographers the ability to create a range of artistic images using a computer. It is interesting - and hopefully helpful - to learn that David Hockney has totally embraced the new digital technology of the iPad, which he describes as ‘a new medium’, also commenting that “a pencil is technology” - “a brush is technology”.

The landscape of the Jurassic Coast, as well as the ever changing colours and moods of the sea are endless sources of inspiration, but pretty much anything can become an element of my digitally created artwork.

My first exhibition “Photography - The Next Dimension” was held at Eype Centre for the Arts, near Bridport, in 2009. I will be exhibiting 5 pieces of work Altered Images” at The Incident Room, 32 Salisbury Street, Blandford Forum DT11 7AR, between 3rd April and 26th May, Tuesday - Saturday 10.30am to 4.00pm. I do hope that some of you will be able to get there to have a look.

I discovered “The Shed” on a freezing cold January day in 2011 - I walked into the Malthouse Gallery where I found Chelsea, exhibiting, and working on, some of her amazing art...we got chatting and she told me about her plan for The Shed Photography website, I think I was the first person to sign up to be part of this exciting project! A year later it has become a wonderful showcase for a diverse range of images by a large number of photographers and artists.

Artist of the Week: Pamela Hollis

Ammonite Abstract Green, Pamela Hollis
This week we are happy to present Pamela Hollis as our Artist of the Week! Pamela is a Dorset based photographer and artist, and says this about her work:

"Being self-taught in both camera and computer skills, has allowed me the freedom to push the boundaries and to experiment with altering and manipulating images, without rigid, pre-conceived external influences - thus allowing each image to evolve, intuitively, in its own way. I generally aim for the abstract in photography rather than the pin-sharp technically perfect image"

Here are a few images of Pamela's work, to introduce her - expect to hear more from Pamela this week, including a guest blog, new work, thoughts on the Shed and her exhibition news!
