Artist of the Week, Philippa Gedge, on her most recent commission with ITV

Over the years ITV’s Britain’s Best Dish has built a reputation for discovering the best in amateur cooks across the country and this year, have upped and ante and invited the nation’s professionals to take up the challenge. The show’s 112 gifted chefs hail from the humblest of bistros to the glitziest of fine-dining restaurants and I was given the most wonderful of experiences to photograph them.

Being on the road for three weeks took its toll but was well worth it. This is my first book publication and seems to have unearthed a desire to explore the world of food photography. In fact since the shoot I am in discussions with a leading international five star hotel chain to freshen up their room service menus so watch this space for news of that in the new year.

Taking on this commission has highlighted for me that you cannot always predict where your life will go and as long as you keep taking opportunities as they arise it will be an interesting journey and doors will just keep on opening up for you.

This commission materialised off the back of a wedding I photographed for an ITV production manager in 2006 on the strength of the wedding cake shot that was used as the backdrop for the ITV show ’Confessions of the wedding trade’ in 2007. You never can tell where work is going to come from..

Britain’s Best Dish is on weekdays at 5pm on ITV.

Artist of the Week: Philippa Gedge

We're very pleased to celebrate Philippa Gedge, London based photographer, as our Artist of the Week this week!
Philippa Gedge
Philippa's passion is portraits, and from this stems her commissioned work: weddings, events, PR & commercial photography. Her passion and ability is evident in all her work, and this can be seen in her Shed profile images, which have the feel and insight of portraits - of animals, birds, objects, & landscapes. The images allow us a brief moment of voyeurism into the life of something - and in that moment we are closer to their reality than we have ever been.

Of her own work, Philippa says: "As long as there is life in the images I am happy. Life isn't just about the sitter's face but light and emotion too".

Her most recent project has been as one of 6 photographers for ITV's Britain's Best Dish, currently being screened on ITV, weekdays at 5pm. We'll be bearing more about her experience of this project later in the week, which has unearthed a desire in Philippa to explore the world of food photography.

She has a fantastic blog, and a website (new website in production and coming soon!), so make sure you have a look at both, they are well worth it. You can also see more of her non-commercial work on her Shed Profile, where you can order and buy prints. Philippa will be guest blogging this week, and as usual we'll also be showcasing her work and celebrating her as a very talented Shed Creative!

Guest Blog by Michelle Frederick, Artist of the Week

When I first heard about Chelsea starting up the Shed I knew that I wanted to be a part of it. The idea of being part of an artistic community was very appealing to me. I intern at the Shed Shop in Barcelona with Chelsea and I see how hard she works on promoting artists, planning exhibitions, and thinking of ways to improve the Shed.

I have been taking photographs for the past ten years. To be able to capture a moment in time has always been interesting to me. When I started I didn't have a clear focus or theme. As I continued I realized that I mainly enjoy photographing buildings or spaces, without people, and showing our relationship to the space.  My experience of being a volunteer on the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina awoke a curiosity in me of what happens to a home or building when the people are gone? The traces that we leave behind, the way a building ages over time and what happens when people no longer inhabit it and nature creeps in, are all themes that I focus on in my work.
